Whisky Distillery Visits
Whisky distilling does not just take place in the Highlands of Scotland.
As part of all our golf tours it is possible to visit a malt whisky distillery
within around an hour's drive, or less, of the golf courses being played.
Distilleries we suggest visiting in and around central Scotland are as follows:
Central Scotland
The town of Pitlochry in Perthshire is home to two malt whisky distilleries.
The Blair Athol distillery is one of the oldest working distilleries in
Scotland. Now part of the Bell's group it produces a 12 year old single malt with a
strong fruity flavour and a smooth finish. Following the tour here, dependant
on the group size, whisky tasting sessions can be arranged where the group will
be taken through the characteristics of six different malts.
This is Scotland's smallest distillery and a fascinating place to visit. Tours
at Edradour are well
organised around what looks more like a small farm than a distillery. The
whisky is smooth and light and only distributed through specialist outlets, so
this is a great opportunity to try some!

Around 15 minutes from North Berwick is the Glenkinchie distillery, home of
"The Edinburgh Malt". Glenkinchie produces a fragrant, woody and light drink.
Distilling started here around 1825 and the distillery was reconstructed in the
1890s as a model Victorian operation, complete with houses for workers. The
distillery is home to the largest pot stills in Scotland. A tour here, as at
every distillery, ends with an opportunity to enjoy a taste of the local
product.

When playing golf in Ayrshire we suggest visiting
Glengoyne distillery which is just 15 miles to the north of Glasgow. A
trip from Prestwick or Troon will take around 4 hours in total.
The distillery is in a scenic setting and offers a number of tasting sessions
over and above the standard tour. All tours end with a taste of the product but
with advance notice, and depending on the group size, 'nosing' and tasting
sessions, warehouse visits, and Master Blender sessions where visitors even
have the chance to create their own whisky, are all possible.
The single malt produced here is described as having a rich malt aroma, with
hints of oak, apple and sherry and a fruity finish. Close to the distillery is
beautiful Loch Lomond which also makes this a visit well worth turning into a
full day out.
