The Duke's course in St Andrews was designed by five-times Open Champion Peter Thomson and
had the honour of being awarded Championship status in its very first year.
While this is a challenging par 71 heathland golf course, it will appeal
to all levels of golfer as there are five separate tees at every hole.
The forward tees present a very different golf course from the Championship tees -
but all give the opportunity to appreciate the surrounding countryside
while enjoying the distinct character presented by each hole.
There are panoramic views of St Andrews and the bay from various points on the
golf course.
Golf architect Tim Liddy introduced changes to the course in 2006, including the
creation of five completely new holes. The philosophy behind the changes was to allow
the course to 'grow out of the land' rather than be imposed upon it.
Another advantage of the Duke's is that ride on carts are permitted on the course
and there is a clear cart path throughout.
