Muirfield is the home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Records date back to
1744 when the Club wrote the original 13 Rules of Golf. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh
Golfers moved to its current home in 1891 on 18 holes laid out by Old Tom Morris.
The course has been host to 11 Amateur Championships and 16 Open Championships,
the most recent being the British Open Championship
in 2013.
The course layout features a clockwise outward nine that circles an anti-clockwise
inward 9, so the wind directions changes for golfers throughout their round. The course
at Muirfield, which is consistently rated amongst the top ten in the world, is a
challenging test of links golf with thick rough and over 150 bunkers.
Golfers wishing to play Muirfield as part of a golf tour to Scotland need to plan well
in advance as times may be booked from 15 months in advance of play.
